Hidden Air Leaks Inside Your Home

Even the smallest air leak in your home can make a big difference to your energy bill. It’s important to check for drafts in your home and to fix them as soon as possible. Sealing up cracks and keeping out drafts will keep your home more efficient.

Check the electrical outlets in your home for insulation. The plastic plate does not form an airtight seal with the wall, allowing air to escape. Some electricians install a foam gasket underneath the plate as a form of insulation. While this is better than nothing, it still is not airtight. Your best bet is to purchase a tube of caulk and line the edges of the outlets.

Remove the plastic plate from the outlet and apply a layer of caulk around the edges of the hole. Once dried, replace the plastic cover for an airtight seal. This can also help seal electrical and ceiling boxes to reduce drafts around your home.
